Sexual Rehabilitation
After prostate cancer treatment — whether surgery or radiation — we're here to support you and your partner with personalized sexual rehabilitation and sex therapy.
After prostate cancer treatment — whether surgery or radiation — there are two types of sexual rehabilitation available to support your recovery: penile rehabilitation and erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments.
Penile rehabilitation is focused on preserving penile length after surgery, maintaining the health of penile tissue, and helping you return to sexual activity, including penetrative sex, as early as possible. If you’re experiencing penile curvature (a condition called Peyronie’s disease) or are curious about a penile implant, a sexual medicine urologist can walk you through your options.
ED treatments are designed to help restore erectile function when spontaneous erections aren’t yet possible. Depending on your situation, your care team may recommend oral medications, injectable medications, vacuum pumps, or a surgically implanted penile pump — and together you’ll find the right fit for your lifestyle and goals.
Sex therapy is another important part of recovery — not just for you, but for your partner too. Prostate cancer treatment can affect both of you, and sex therapy creates a space to build confidence, work through feelings of loss or grief, strengthen communication, and protect the intimacy in your relationship. Your partner’s concerns — including any sexual function issues of their own — are just as welcome in that conversation.
Ultimately, sexual rehabilitation after prostate cancer is about empowering you and your partner to stay connected and sexually active, even as things change. Your care is tailored to your unique situation and goals, so that the path forward reflects what matters most to you.
