How People Make Treatment Decisions

Deciding on a treatment plan for prostate cancer can feel like a lot to take in — and that is completely normal. You are not alone. We will walk through all of your options with you and help you find the plan that feels right for you and your family.

How People Make Treatment Decisions

Deciding on a treatment plan for prostate cancer can feel like a lot to take in. There are several options to consider — surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, or active surveillance — each with different risks, benefits, and effects on daily life. We are here to help you work through all of your options and find the plan that is right for you.

Can I Ask My Doctor What They Would Do?

Yes — and many people do. It is a fair question. Your doctor’s answer will be based on many things, including the latest research, their clinical experience, your overall health, and your personal lifestyle and preferences. There is no single right answer for everyone, which is why your input matters so much.

What Is Shared Decision-Making?

At the Weiser Center, we believe the best decisions are made together. This is called shared decision-making — a process where you and your care team work as partners. Your doctor will:

  • Explain your diagnosis in plain, clear terms
  • Talk through the possible side effects of each treatment
  • Review statistics and other information to help you compare your options
  • Share information about what other men in similar situations have chosen — and what happened as a result

The goal is to make sure you have everything you need to feel confident and informed.

What Other Resources Will Help Me?

We will connect you with trusted educational resources written in plain, easy-to-understand language. Think of them as a personal guide — something to revisit after your appointments, help you organize your thoughts, and weigh the value of different choices for your own life.

Resources include materials developed right here at the Weiser Center for Prostate Cancer, as well as nationally and internationally recognized guides, including:

  • The Prostate Cancer Foundation — an outstanding patient guide that covers the differences in logistics and side effects for both surgery and radiation therapy.
  • NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) — educational materials that walk you through different treatment recommendations and paths, based on your health and your prostate cancer risk level.

How Do I Make My Final Decision?

Your decision involves more than your doctor’s advice and educational materials. We encourage you to:

  • Review the resources your care team shares with you
  • Weigh the pros and cons of each option
  • Bring your family and friends into the conversation

The people who know you best can offer support and perspective that matters. Together with your care team, they will help make sure your final decision reflects what is most important to you.
