Weiser Patient-Centered Approach

The Weiser Center for Prostate Cancer was created to be a sanctuary where patients can thrive. With this in mind, we tailored each of our programs and initiatives to suit the needs of the patient.

We understand that patients’ partners and family members are a part of the patient’s ‘home team’ and their participation in the process of care is critical. We invite partners and family members to be involved so that they can be informed, supported, and even help us be the best we can be.

We place our patients at the center of all that we do.
From integrating them into the decision-making process to crafting intentional programs with you in mind, all our efforts go towards making sure that you and your loved ones receive the best care at Michigan Medicine.

We know that the only way to be patient-centered is to involve you in all that we do at the Weiser Center – from designing the patient navigator role to crafting interview questions. Our patients participate in our leadership meetings, and we consult you when designing our programs and even when hiring new employees.

When the WCPC was created, the leadership invited former patients into the 6-month long brainstorming sessions, where we were able to gather their input on initiatives that would help us improve.

The improvement opportunities that arose from these sessions included:

  • The creation of digital presence – which takes input from patients and care team members.
  • Peer mentoring program that matches former patients with new patients to not only provide support and help connect patients to relevant resources, but to also enlist feedback from current patients that directly influences the content of our resources. We plan to develop a partner mentoring program with input from partners.
  • Designing a new patient navigator position to proactively reach out to patients and ensure a smooth patient journey with us. Because of the input from our patients, we could further develop the program that would bring the best outcomes for future patients.

That being said, at the Weiser Center for Prostate Cancer, we include patients in pivotal moments like these because your input matters to us. You are not just a focus group. You matter to us. That’s why we prioritize understanding you– your story, your needs, what worked for you and what didn’t–, so that we can treat your cancer in a cutting edge, empathic way.
